Studio v In-House v Freelance: Which Design Career Path Is Right for You?

Each path suits a different working style — there's no universally "better" option.

Studio/agency

suits people who want variety, collaboration, and exposure to many brands and challenges quickly — at the cost of less long-term ownership of any single brand.

In-house

suits people who want depth over breadth — building deep expertise in one brand, influencing its direction over years, and typically more stable hours — at the cost of narrower creative variety.

Freelance

suits people who want control over their client mix, schedule, and workload — at the cost of taking on the business side (invoicing, chasing payment, finding your own work) alongside the creative work itself.

It's not necessarily permanent

Many designers move between these paths across a career — studio experience early on, then in-house for stability, then freelance later for flexibility, or any other order. Watching how designers at different stages talk about their own paths is one of the fastest ways to figure out which fits you now.

Want to see these principles in action? Watch how studios like Koto, Ragged Edge, and DixonBaxi present and explain their own process — the same skill you're building into your portfolio.
